Kishtwar tense amid fresh violence, curfew imposed across Jammu region

Srinagar, Aug 11: (GNS) Following the communal violence in Kishtwar and its adjoining areas which erupted on Friday after Eid prayers, the arson has now affected whole Jammu region. The curfew has been clamped in Jammu city, Rajouri, Udhampur, Samba, Reasi and Kathua as a precautionary measure. Reports reaching GNS said that situation in Kishtwar is ‘tense’ and army has been called in to assist the local administration to tackle the situation which is now reeling under curfew for last 3 days. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah has appealed both the factions to keep calm and “not let the political parties exploit your sentiments”. “I am using the channels of the media to tell you to not fall prey to rumors. Don’t allow political parties to exploit these rumors,” Omar in a press conference today at Jammu said. To avoid further damage and to prevent spread of rumors mobile Internet services have been blocked in the entire state. The government has also suspended the annual Amarnath Yatra from Jammu to avoid any untoward incident. Fresh clashes were reported on Saturday in which three persons were injured. Even as Army troops in armored vehicles drove through the streets of Kishtwar, located nearly 230 kilometers north of Jammu, the local administration advised people to remain indoors and not to violate prohibitory orders. According to Jammu University officials All Jammu University examinations including practical examinations scheduled to be held on 12th August (Monday) and 13th August (Tuesday) 2013 are postponed. Jammu Bandh was extended by 48 hours by BJP and other parties yesterday in support of the demand for sacking of Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo. (GNS)
