Upcoming elections ‘historic opportunity’ for establishing lasting peace in JK: Mufti

Chadoora: Seeking a decisive mandate from people to establish political stability in Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that political and economic empowerment of the residents of J&K is main agenda of his party. “PDP, with the support of the people is committed to set up corruption free system of justice and equality in Jammu and Kashmir,” Mufti said in a statement issued to GNS. Mufti while addressing a public meeting at Chadoora said that programmes and policies of his party are formulated by incorporating political as well as economic aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Addressing political and socio-economic aspirations of the people of the J&K is main focus of our vision document.” He said that PDP during its tenure had proved how to deliver good governance, bring transparency and accountability in the governance. “People of the State are now comparing our three year tenure with the decades long misgovernance of successive National Conference regimes”, he said and added that PDP led government had established a system of governance which earned credibility and acceptability of the common masses. “In our tenure of just three years in power, our party set into motion a comprehensive process of economic empowerment and infrastructural development in the state which is to be taken to its logical conclusion with the support of the people”, he said. Stressing on the need of political stability for accelerating developmental activities, PDP patron said that the coming assembly election would be an historic opportunity for establishing lasting peace and implementing equitable developmental agenda in the State. “If 2002 elections were turning point in the history of Jammu and Kashmir, the coming assembly polls are historic in the sense that it would be an opportunity to change fate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Sayeed said, adding that “during its tenure from 2002 to 2005 PDP had brought visible positive changes on the ground but our mission is yet not completed. Elaborating PDP’s agenda for economic empowerment of the people he said that Jammu and Kashmir has huge natural resource in the form of water and it is on the top of party’s agenda to utilize this natural resource for the socio-economic growth of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that people of Jammu and Kashmir have first right on the water which flows through this State and PDP has been agitating for this right. Exhorting the youth to participate in the ongoing movement of his party to establish a new system of justice and equality, Mufti said that PDP is the only party in the State that has formulated a separate Youth Development Policy for the overall welfare of the youth to be implemented once in power. “PDP has devised a sustainable strategy to support the young people in developing their potential, improve their living conditions and give them greater responsibilities in political decision-making processes.” He said PDP believes that the youth of J&K have the right to seek meaningful employment, participation in decision-making that affects their lives, and protection from socio-economic and political exploitation.”The party would strive towards realizing this objective for the State’s emancipated young population who have done us pride in every field.” Expressing concern over the magnitude and disproportionate effect of unemployment and underemployment upon youth and its profound implications for the future of our society, Mufti said that PDP is aware of the problems of unemployed youth and give special attention of solve this problem. Speaking on the occasion, senior PDP leader Moulvi Iftikar Hussain Ansari said that unlike other political parties PDP has never bartered aspirations of the people of the State for enjoying power. “The tenure of PDP led regime was historic period in the political history of the State because that government had succeeded in involving people in the governance. Before 2002, people had no faith in the democracy or democratic institutions it was only after 2002 assembly peoples’ faith in such institutions were restored”, he said. Former Minister and MLA Chadoora Javed Mustafa Mir and others also spoke on the occasion. (GNS)
