Srinagar, June 15: A renowned media practitioner of the State and former Joint Director Information, Mr. Abdur Rashid Wani (Shahid) is no more. The end came during the intervening night at SKIMS, Srinagar where he had been admitted few days back.
The death of Mr. Rashid Shahid has been widely condoled. Colleagues in media fraternity have described his demise as a professional loss which would be difficult to fill.A condolence meeting was held at the Directorate of Information which was presided over by Director Information, Zaffar Ahmad. Addressing the meeting Zaffar said Shahid would for long be remembered for his professional acumen and dedication besides the strong imprints he laid in the departmental hierarchy. The meeting prayed for eternal solace to the departed soul.Shahid was known for his professional competence and acumen for which he was widely respected. He had a good command over English language, sentence structure and grammar. Friends and colleagues would often refer their write ups to him for subbing and corrections.His professional inputs and advice was taken by his superiors was all seriousness and proper context. Born at Khanpora, Baramulla, Shahid had a humble beginning. He did his Diploma in Journalism from The Hindustan Times, New Delhi where he was awarded a gold medal. This made Shahid first journalism pass out from the State. Soon he started writing for many famed newspapers of that time like Statesman, The Times of India etc. But he had to come back to Valley due to family compulsions. Here he joined back his previous job. Later he joined the Department of Information and by dint of hard work, honesty and dedication rose to the position of Joint Director Information, Kashmir where from he retired few years back. During this period, he was posted as District Information Officer, Assistant Director, Deputy Director etc where he made significant contributions.After retirement, Shahid was also working with reputed media houses of J&K and outside. He was also associated with a voluntary group, Help Foundation for a long time. He also acted as a practical guide to a whole lot of young and practicing journalists.
