Police on Tuesday claimed to have cracked the Bemina Fidayeen attack by arresting two LeT militants including a foreigner.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, Abdul Ghani Mir while addressing a Press conference in Srinagar said that On 13 – 03 – 2013, at around 1045 Hours, two militants entered the sports ground of Police Public School, Bemina (PPS) and attacked the CRPF personnel put on standby deployment for dealing with Law and Order in wake of a strike call announced by separatists. The incident resulted in death of five CRPF personnel and injuries to a few CRPF personnel and four civilians.
In the ensuing gunfight, both the militants were gunned down by the first responders from CRPF and District Police Srinagar. From the spot, two AK47′s with five Magazines each, two pistols with two Magazines each, two pouches, one UBGL, four Hand Grenades, one Rifle Grenade , one Sim Card, transparent poly-pack containing “Made in Pakistan” medicines and ointment and two small bags were recovered, Mir said.
He said the investigations so far have revealed that the attack was carried out by two LeT Cadres, identified as Saif resident of Dera Ghazi Khan and Haider resident of Multan Pakistan at the behest of their commander Ahmad Bhai and Logistics chief Anas Bilal who are based across the LOC. The duo had been facilitated, handled and controlled by Pakistani commander Mohammad Zubair @ Talha Zaraar resident of Chak No 104, Multan Pakistan and local co-commander Bashir Ahmad Mir @ Haroon son of Mir Zaman Mir resident of Uri. During investigation of the case, both Bashir Ahmad Mir @ Haroon and Talha Zaraar have been arrested by District Police Srinagar and are currently on Police Remand.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that while Talha Zaraar had come to the valley in the first week of January, 2013, the two terrorists, Saif and Haider had entered into the valley in mid-February this year, he said.
As revealed by the arrested militants, the CRPF personnel in close proximity to youngsters playing cricket were purposefully chosen as a target since that would allow them to inflict maximum damages and had the potential to lead to civilian causalities as well, he said.
Further Haroon, during preliminary questioning has also revealed that, since the strike call had been announced by the separatists, he was sure to find CRPF personnel deployed on the highway and usual presence of unarmed CRPF personnel deployed as standby component for law and order during strike days in the sports ground of Police Public School Bemina, had attracted his attention many a times in the past as well, he said.
During investigation, arms and ammunition in huge quantity have been recovered upon disclosures made by the arrested militants. These include two AK 47′s (with eight Magazines), 240 AK Rounds, one UBGL, 40 Rifle Grenades, 40 Hand Grenades, two Pouches, two Anti Tank Mines, 12 RC’s, one Map, Two light bags, three GPS devices, two Compasses, two wireless sets, two Time Bombs (Charge, Timer and Detonators), Pencil Cell Batteries and a transparent poly – pack containing ” Made in Pakistan” medicines and ointment, he said, adding that the investigation of the case has been entrusted to a Special Investigation Team.
